Midweek: three finishes! from With Strings Attached

On Monday I drove to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, to deliver my three Wisconsin Quilt Show entries to the Nancy Zieman store.

The store is a full-line quilt shop and, yay me!, I did not buy anything.  There is an exhibit about Nancy and her career.

A year ago we made the same trip. It was Stevens' last day trip. Just 110 miles but logistics were getting difficult then.

In the studio:

My RSC project this year is making 20 9" Ohio Star blocks in the monthly color for a wheelchair-sized quilt.

The July purple is quilted and bound.

I had a couple of finishes this week.

First is the latest Bonnie Hunter mystery, Old Town. I changed the colors a little, but otherwise followed her instructions.

Old Town, a Bonnie Hunter mystery 78" x 78"

Old Town (back and binding detail)

I also finished a string hourglass. No pattern on this one, I just needed to use some of my many strings!

String Hourglass 60" x 85"

String Hourglass (back and binding detail)

I'm working on a couple more. Then, I hope to get back to my Sunflower One-Block Wonder.

Happy Quilting!

Weekly update: two finishes + reading from With Strings Attached

Two walks at Illinois Beach State Park this weekend were good for my body and my spirit.

Woodland violet, field horsetail, wild strawberry, hoary puccoon, prickly pear, serviceberry, false Solomon's seal.

If you look at the horizon you can see the Chicago skyline, 40 miles away.

In the studio:  two finishes!

The flimsy was in my post last week.  Now it's quilted and bound.    One of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects this year is to make a wheelchair-sized quilt (approx. 40 x 50) out of Ohio Stars in the monthly color.

I signed up for the guild mystery ...

Midweek: mystery belatedly begun, placemats + reading from With Strings Attached

Almost-full moon at 5:30 this morning.  Didn't we just have a full moon? The days and nights fly by.

I thought I'd signed up for the guild's 2025 mystery quilt-along in January but it turned out that I hadn't.  I rectified the omission by paying the $10 fee at the meeting last week.  Five weeks' clues dropped into my email box.

The pattern requires 3-1/2 yards of background (tone-on-tone recommended) and either a jelly roll or 40 2-1/2" strips.  I had a 4-yard piece in lavender (estate sale purchase $5) for the background ...

Friday check in: it's a flimsy!! and more progress from With Strings Attached

A librarian's Valentine!

We didn't get much snow from Wednesday's storm (about 3") but now it's very, very cold. I went to Rotary yesterday morning (S stayed in) and didn't go out the rest of the day.    More snow coming this weekend.

Old Town is a flimsy!

I added a white border to stabilize the edge.  8 yards by weight.  I have an April appointment with Barb-the-quilter.

I made two placemats out of the leftovers from Lantern, the top-along for February. (See last Friday's post.)  They await binding.

Twenty Ohio Stars in this month ...

Midweek: 25 blocks, OMG 2025, top-a-long from With Strings Attached

All 25 Old Town blocks are assembled.  I think the design looks good this way but the sashing, which I have yet to make, kicks it up several notches.  I will persevere.

I've begun something new.

I signed up for the Top-a-long with Running Doe Quilts .  She is a designer for Villa Rosa. One pattern a month with the goal of making a flimsy.  Getting it quilted is not required.  The January pattern is Amelia .

These are big blocks -- 17" finished -- and that 8-1/2" center square called for the jumbo Kaffe flowers.

My One Monthly Goal for January ...

Weekly update: card shower request, Old Town, estate sale + bargains from With Strings Attached

I'm starting this week's post with a personal request.

Stevens will be 85 on January 18.  Can you mail him a birthday card?  If you don't have our address, indicate that in your comment and I will PM it to you.  Five years ago he was quite surprised to get so many cards.   This year he's alert but he's declining, so now is the time.  THANK YOU!

Happy New Year! Old Town, the Annual Reckoning and goals for 2025 from With Strings Attached

I faithfully remembered the first-day rabbit, rabbit charm.

I'm trying a variation to the traditional Hoppin' John.  It's a  recipe from the Washington Post:   Jollof Rice.  In addition to the black-eyed peas it has brown rice, canned tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, onion, garlic, tumeric, and thyme.   The peas are simmering now (with salt pork) and smell delicious.

This was us last evening.
We watched Dalgleish (based on P.D. James mysteries) and an episode of The Larkins (delightful!).

Bonnie surprised everyone yesterday with Part 8 of the Old Town mystery.   I used the Studio 180 Wing Clipper ruler for ...

Weekly update: solstice, ornament bombing, and a little sewing from With Strings Attached

On Thursday Zion Woman's Club members helped with the Elf Network.  The bags contain sorted Christmas gifts, personalized by age/gender for each family.  Bags are numbered, people present their number and get their bag.  It was very efficient.

We did nothing to observe the solstice but now there will be a minute more daylight in the morning and in the evening.
I love this poem. A friend said she rereads Cooper's The Dark Is Rising series this time of year.  I'd like to revisit them but there are so many other books in the queue. . .
